Classic Editor’s Loss of Justify and Underline – A Fix

If it is of any help:-

The shortcut keys are still available (listed by the ? icon).

Justify = Shift + Alt + j

Underline = Ctrl + u

The somewhat ridiculous explanation for loss of the tools is at:-

I am quite sure they are trying to herd us into the new Editor as part of their move to all Application Programming Interface (API).

A forum topic about the New Editor (do pitch in) is at:-

If they would only replicate the original facilities then there wouldn’t be a problem. They don’t seem capable.

Meanwhile more and more blogs are being abandoned.

Update: Having examined 298 blogs of those following me or being followed by me since May 2014, 36% have ceased to function:-

2 % stopped functioning in 2014.

8 % stopped functioning in 2015.

16 % stopped functioning in 2016 (last post being before November) .

6 % have been deleted by authors or have no server.

2 % have no content.

2 % ceased to exist.

  1. Personally Graham, I stopped using underline years ago when it became the default for indicating a url. And their arguments for not using the justify tool seem pretty logical to me. I would be interested to know your source for “more and more blogs are being abandoned” and whether they are related to these issues or other reasons. I think some of the changes that WP make are a matter of personal preference.

  2. Some themes (mine included) do not automatically render an underline with a link when published. It has to be added manually.

    Having spent years as a Technical Author, I will want to use underline on occasion. The idea that a mere service provider can decide the protocols that we use is inappropriate and an anathema.

    If WP’s reasoning were genuine why have those tools not been removed from the New Editor.

    I haven’t counted yet, but a significant number of followers and followed have stopped posting. Noticeably so in the past 18 months.

    Changes must continue to provide the facilities that authors built their blogs upon. Not just suit some peoples personal preferences. Otherwise it is a betrayal of trust.

    N.B. I’ve now added some numbers to the post.
